Soul Sides is a new instrumental series curated by Amerigo Gazaway, pairing two complementary styles on each release. Inspired by analog formats like vinyl and cassette, each volume explores two sides of a shared musical DNA — tracing hip-hop’s roots through the genres that shaped it.
Back to Cali digs into the Soul Mates Library archives for a sun-drenched blend of West Coast boogie, disco-funk, and G-funk grooves. Side A (The Boogie) channels roller rink-ready two-step, while Side B (The Bounce) leans into lowrider anthems and trunk-rattling synths.
“A lot of these tracks started when I was still living in Berkeley…digging at Amoeba, doing gigs around the Bay, and cooking up beats in our little studio apartment.
